The Zithulele Tigers headed to Johannesburg in October to compete in the annual Inter-Provincial Touch Rugby Tournament. We sent an U15 and an U17 team to compete against the best South Africa has to offer. Our U15 side was comprised of a number of very junior players (several U11s!) and despite competing in the boys league, we included three promising young girls.
The Tigers had an overwhelmingly positive tour, scoring tries against players quite literally twice their size and with many years of rugby experience behind them. The chief goal of the U17s was to defeat Soweto – another developing side – which was achieved in fine style. The Tigers beat Soweto in a tightly contested league match by six tries to five, and then eased past them the following day in the 5th/6th play off to put the finishing touches on an excellent tournament.
Likewise, the U15s caused some of the bigger unions some real concern in their league fixtures, and then capped off their tournament with a fine victory over Northerns U15 girls in a friendly encounter on the final day.
